Jericoacoara: fame, infrastructure and crowds
Jeri is the best-known spot in Ceará and the best equipped for tourism: many schools, plenty of places to stay and eat, plus the famous Lagoa do Paraíso. The flip side is well known: high prices, many kites in the air at the same time and an atmosphere that feels more urban than rural.
It is a good destination if you want nightlife and excursions alongside the kiting. For your first hours of lessons, the density on the water counts against it.
Cumbuco: practical, close to Fortaleza
Thirty kilometres from the capital, Cumbuco is the choice when you have few days and do not want a three-hour drive. The Cauipe lagoon works well for beginners but gets busy in peak months. It is the easiest spot to fit into a short trip.
Paracuru: historic and less touristy
Paracuru is a historic Brazilian kite spot, with excellent wind conditions and a strong local community. Less touristy than Jeri and Cumbuco, it also has less school infrastructure: better suited to riders who are already independent and after something authentic.
Icaraizinho: the balance
Icaraizinho de Amontada combines quality wind, a flat shallow lagoon, few people on the water and an IKO certified school with multilingual instructors. The 50 cm to 1.2 m depth, with no obstacles, genuinely changes your first hours, while you are still learning to recover your board.
The wind blows from July to January, peaking from August to October. Off the water the village is quiet: restaurant and beach bar at the Cabana, accommodation a few minutes' walk away and downwinders along the coast.
Choosing in three questions
- Are you a beginner? Go for shallow, uncrowded water: that is Icaraizinho.
- Few days, landing in Fortaleza? Cumbuco saves the drive; Icaraizinho is about 3 hours by car.
- Want nightlife and excursions? Jericoacoara concentrates the tourist offer.

What changes when you are learning
In your first hours, the water matters more than the spot's fame. In Icaraizinho the lagoon is 50 cm to 1.2 m deep, flat and free of obstacles: you can stand up, recover your board and start again without stress. In open sea, every fall costs more energy.
Density on the water counts too: fewer kites in the air means less collision risk and more room to make mistakes. Add radio support throughout the lesson and IKO and ABK certified instructors, and it adds up: around 12 hours of lessons to ride independently.
And off the water?
Icaraizinho is a village: restaurant and beach bar at the Cabana, sunset on top of the dunes, Lagoa do Uruaú for a quieter day and artisanal fishing on the rare windless days. Jericoacoara is 90 km away and is worth a two or three day escape during your stay.
Jeri and Cumbuco offer more nightlife and more restaurants. The choice depends on what you want at the end of the day: activity, or silence with the sound of the sea.
